Fallen Angels: Black Veil Brides' Jake Pitts Remembers Rock on the Range

May 21: My band -- Black Veil Brides -- and I head to Rock on the Range in Columbus, Ohio. We flew in the night before from Los Angeles to play the festival. As we are pulling up to our backstage area, massive amounts of people are walking up to the gates to enter.
We arrived, already in full stage makeup, ready to go. We had a couple hours to kill before we hit the stage, so Jinxx and I decided to head over to the FYE stage to check out Asking Alexandria. We went up side stage and ran into the legendary Sebastian Bach! He was there to perform "Youth Gone Wild" with AA.
After standing side stage for about a minute, he comes over to Jinxx and me and asks, "Where are you guys from, you look great!" Photos started being snapped, and then he ran out to perform and tore it up!
We head back to get ready to perform at the Jagermeister stage at 3:45 p.m. As we hit the stage, people are pouring in from all over, filling the stairs and walkways in the stadium. During our set, we played two brand-new songs from our new record, Set The World On Fire, which will be released June 14. The first of the two, "God Bless You," people really got into it. This was a track nobody has heard yet.
The second of the two is our new single, "Fallen Angels." The set seemed to fly by, but it was awesome seeing Sebastian Bach rocking out side stage with us the whole time. He hung out after and took more pictures, and is now becoming a good friend of ours.
Jinxx and I had a photo shoot and round table interview with Ben and Cameron from Asking Alexandria for Guitar World later on, then we went to watch Korn perform. Those guys are still killing it.
By this time, drinks are flowing and everyone is having a blast, and the headliner, Avenged Sevenfold, hits the stage. This was my fourth time seeing them live. They had loads of pyrotechnics lighting up the night with fire.
As they closed the night and the crowd of 35,000 people left, the night didn't end for us. Sunday night we flew back to Los Angeles, where we will rehearse for another week before heading to Germany, Austria, Copenhagen, Sweden, Scotland and England for a festival run, where we will be debuting more new songs live before the new record is released.
Then you can catch us on Warped Tour all summer.
Jake Pitts plays guitar in Black Veil Brides, whose highly-anticipated sophomore effort, Set The World On Fire, is due out June 14 on Lava Records.

Black Veil Brides 4-21-2011 at The Masquerade, Atlanta

I have had many a conversation with various people involved in the music industry about what is missing in music these days. We all agree that technology has helped and hurt the business and that it is an over-saturated market. Rock music is supposed to be about things that are bad for you, things your parents warn you about. Rock music is supposed to make young girls scream and wish that they were making out with the guys on the stage. It's been a while since I have seen this type of reaction at a show. When I saw Black Veil Brides recently, I was delighted to discover that this type of behavior still exists.
I was one of the very few adults at the Black veil Brides show a few weeks ago at The Masquerade in Atlanta. Sure there were others old enough to drink and vote but they were mostly serving as chaperone's and drivers for the predominately all young girl crowd. I was very intrigued by the style of the band, a style that hearkened back to the days of Adam Ant, Alice Cooper and Motley Crue. I was curious to see if this was the next generation of glam.

I literally fought my way through a gauntlet of teen age girls and made my way to the photo pit. As I was waiting there was a little lady reapplying layer upon layer of a very shiny lip gloss as preparation for the band to go on. A huge black curtain had been draped across the stage to keep prying eyes from seeing the stage set up that would surely elicit piercing screams. The curtain also served as a tool for the band to tease the fans with. Occasionally, a silhouette would be seen through the fabric and the females would go crazy. I could have been easily irritated by this, instead it took me back to my first concerts; a time when in my life when I spent many hours after school listening to and fantasizing about my favorite rock stars.
It occurred to me that the element of rock and roll sex appeal was alive and kicking at the Black Veil Brides show. Appropriate that their first album was called Sex & Hollywood.
The curtain went down dramatically revealing Ashley Purdy (bass), Jinxx (guitar), Jake Pitts (guitar), Andy Six (vocals) and Christian Coma (drums); five guys that looked like they had traveled through time from The Cathouse circa 1988. Big hair, tight black pants, boots, make up and finger horn inducing rock. All the ingredients were there and they were delicious! As a photographer, this was a visual feast; as an appreciator of music it was an auditory picnic. These guys were good, they could really play. It was definitely a throw-back to bands like Faster Pussycat and Motley Crue minus songs about coke and one night stands. Everyone copies someone somewhere along the way at least they were a very talented imitation. I kept thinking that maybe in other cities there were more "adults" in attendance at Black Veil Brides shows. Maybe Atlanta just hadn't caught on yet. There had to be some reasonable explanation because these guys were solid. My only complaint about Black Veil Brides is that they do seem a little "over produced." Over-produced as they may be though, Black Veil Brides gives me hope for the future of rock and roll.

10 Best Moments of Rock on the Range

BEST SELF-EMPOWERING PEP TALK: BLACK VEIL BRIDES

It's almost too easy to bag on Black Veil Brides. The androgynous Cincinnati five-piece slather on goth makeup with blood splatters and death-gray tints, wear corny leathers, and shape their jet-black hair into super-stylized swoops, with the finished product resembling an '80s jock-metal band like Poison turned hardcore zombie punks. But while their uber-dolled-up aesthetic is bound to turn some strangers off, Brides vocalist Andy Biersack doesn't care -- he preaches a message of empowerment and acceptance, packaged in the heavy riffs and shrieking of tracks like "Sweet Blasphemy," "Knives and Pens," and "Fallen Angels," a single from their just-released second album, Set the World on Fire. He reminded the crowd that they didn't need anyone's approval -- "Who cares if people don't like you?" -- to a wave of cheers. "The next time somebody fucks with you," advised Biersack, "I want you to say, 'Fuck you, motherfucker.'" Soon after, he launched another interesting approach to hype his band: "We don't give a shit if you don't like our music, but if you believe in yourself, we want to see your fists in the air."
